Because the coral elements are spread throughout the room it doesn't feel overly colorful and your eye is able to move about the space taking it all in. Additionally the white elements in the room keep the taupey‐tan hues from looking too muddy.

Smith & Vansant Architects have tiled this shower‐tub enclosure with off‐white subway tiles on both the walls and the ceiling – a smart move for durability.

It's a classic print that has a modern graphic look. The pewter beading detail and champagne color bring in the gray‐brown tones used throughout the room.

This is a terrific palette for an office or a kid's or teen's bedroom. The grays have a soothing vibe but the heart‐racing red injects some energy into the space.

If you love hunting for vintage chairs a great way to build a set is by keeping an eye out for chairs made of the same material or in a distinctive shape – cane‐backed ladder‐back wood metal wicker and so on. Once you have your set you can determine whether or not you also want to unify them with paint (see No. 2).
