Make the most of a breakfast nook by installing a complete compartment that keeps diners out of the way of the cooking action in the kitchen. Additionally those on a budget will benefit from copying the style of the boxed‐in nook pictured here. Inexpensive wood can be painted white to make the area bright. To add value choose a more expensive tabletop and treat it with a good sealant oil to keep it looking good with use.

Replace the standard ceiling fixture with a classic drum pendant light on a dimmer switch. Add a piece of real furniture. An armchair (if you have the room) or a small gleaming wood or marble table is a good choice for the classic bath. Amp up the exotic touches and pay attention to the sensory experience to create a spalike ambience in your own bathroom. Put your overhead light on a dimmer. Everything looks better in soft light. Choose a few beautiful hand‐painted tiles and prop them up on your sink backsplash or hang them on the wall as art. Splurge on nice towels. I suggest supersoft and luxuriously big bath sheets as well as fringed and knotted hammam‐style towels to hang by the sink.

In this country kitchen designed by architect Christine Fikseaunet a simple window seat with an upholstered banquette cushion is paired with a wood table to create a casual dining setting. With the addition of a small screen in the corner of the nook it also allows for communal television viewing among family members or friends.

With their clean lines and comfort button‐backed chesterfield sofas are truly timeless and look as good in a modern warehouse apartment as in a grand country abode. The classic version comes in tan leather but for a sumptuous update I love the raspberry‐pink and pewter‐colored velvet numbers here.

When using wood collected from a demolition make sure to carefully remove any old nails. The pieces will need to be planed and cut to the desired shapes and sizes also. Unless you have the right tools and machines this prep work should be done by a professional finish carpenter.

Look beyond the simple monochromatic palette and you'll see a range of textures at work. Contrast the matte black wall with the rough surface of the white painted bricks and the soft inviting bed throw with the rough natural‐fiber rug. Even the ceiling and artwork are textured. This is an all‐over tactile and visual feast.

The combination of the soft ottomans leather chair and luxurious rug brings a sense of depth and comfort to this elegant scheme.

"It's part of a new French‐inspired home on South River in Annapolis Maryland" says Brad Creer of Bradford Design. "The wife wanted an all‐white house both inside and outside including the furniture. The only other colors are the limited use in some of the accents. And the only nonwhite space in the home is the husband's large barroom which has a dark wood finish".
