These elegant window dressings have become the perfect solution for metropolitan homeowners who don't want sheer curtains but aren't keen on passersby snooping either. Here their crisp clean lines and white color add to the room's bright breezy feel. The other plus of course is undeniable curb appeal.

The less metal the less you notice that a wall is dividing the space" says Alison Causer of Alison Causer Design. "In this master bath I really wanted the natural light to reach every corner of the room. Since we used dark natural stone on all four walls we really needed to keep the light moving around the room". Maximize the view. "This home has a sophisticated and subdued palette with walnut casework throughout" says Kerry Ellis of Benning Design Associates. "It also has stunning views which is why we decided to keep the master bath and shower so open".

Keep color to a minimum focusing on white cream and natural wood tones. A tree stump stool by the tub fits perfectly with this look; pick up a ready‐made version or try crafting one yourself. If you choose metallic accents (for drawer pulls etc.) keep them in the warm family; brass or copper would be good choices. Hang a classic hotel‐style robe on a wall hook. Choose an unusual bath mat – bamboo cork or river stone. Wool and sheepskin hold up surprisingly well in damp conditions but it's best to keep them away from direct contact with drippy toes. On the other side of the room by the sink would be a better choice. Natural linen shades filter light beautifully and add a textural note.

"My client had seen a wallpaper at a hotel with a book pattern that she loved " says designer Angela Gutekunst. "So that led me to this classic Brunschwig & Fils paper for her powder bath that worked beautifully".

Splurge on a few luxury bath items to display (and use). Stow all unsightly items behind closed doors or in boxes or bins. It's true that if your existing bath fixtures consist of a pink sink and lemon yellow tile you will be hard pressed to create the black and white palette this look calls for. If you have a bit more time and savings to invest in your bathroom makeover adding wallpaper or a dark paint color to the upper walls and white paneling below (less pricey than retiling) will go far. If you are considering replacing the sink having a vintage cabinet or table fitted with a simple sink bowl can be a creative solution. While you are at it remove that medicine cabinet and hang a pretty mirror instead.

"We like to use frameless shower doors for a couple of reasons" says Mariette Barsoum of Divine Kitchens. "With a frameless door there's no visual separation which make the space larger. Plus unlike framed doors they don't hide the beautiful tilework in the shower. Frameless doors also sport a cleaner more modern look – and we like that". Make a small room feel larger. "I was inspired by the framework of this house and its secluded and forestlike surroundings" says Kimberly Arnold Fletcher of Spectrum Design Group. "My goal was to create an open feel and bring the outside into the master bathroom. The frameless door allowed me to not only provide a transparent look that mirrors the windows added to the space but it also made a very small room feel larger and more spacious".

Depending on what type of professional you hired or if you are doing your own kitchen you may start the finishes and fixture selection process from a different jumping‐off point. Rather than picking the cabinet wood species and finish color by itself and then picking countertops and tile I like to have my clients work on an overall palette of materials at the same time. Layer the materials and create collages of patterns textures and colors to see what works best together.

If you've got original floors and plan to refinish just the kitchen – or are laying new wood floors to match the old for continuity – don't expect a perfect match. Many floors in old homes are made of old‐growth wood and flooring is manufactured differently now. The natural patina of an old floor also is nearly impossible to match. Companies offering reclaimed wood floors can make that matching process easier.

Design says that in this kitchen "the chandeliers were inspired by the wish of the homeowner to have a traditional kitchen that fit into the fabric of their historically important home but still have a bit of flair".

Our washer and dryer are concealed behind bifold doors and while we will replace the cabinetry when we renovate our kitchen the layout is the bee's knees. It allows for us to store our cleaning supplies with our laundry supplies in a central location. Whether you're able to add a laundry unit to your kitchen or outfit your butler's pantry I highly recommend the kitchen laundry room.
