Then opt for a classic deep‐seated leather armchair like this one; the more battered the better. Buy secondhand for extra lived‐in character or source a vintage‐look piece about town (feather‐filled cushions offer an added slouch factor). Prettify it with a floral cushion then sit back and relax with a cuppa (or glass of port).

Restaurant‐style swinging doors with circular glass insets bring energy to the kitchen here while a chandelier made up of globe lights in different hues echoes the shape of the round panes in the door.

One of the most enjoyable pastimes when visiting someone else's home is rummaging through their book collection. Whether you have a full wall of shelving or a slender cabinet or case stock it with a variety of reading material that appeals to all tastes: mysteries bestsellers nonfiction short stories and more. Don't forget to add bedside lamps or reading lights as well as a cushy spot in which to curl up. A folding luggage stand. This hotel‐inspired touch saves guests from having to squat all the way to the floor to rifle through their suitcases. Stash it in the closet when you're not expecting company or leave it open as a design detail. Here it takes the place of a bench at the foot of the bed. Piles of pillows. Some like them flat some like them fluffy. Some prefer down while others sneeze at the mere thought. Keep an assortment of pillows on hand to satisfy guests' individual tastes. And while you're at it invest in a couple of good blankets (one light one heavy) and the best bed linens you can afford. Hooks and hangers. Unlike you your guests don't have a designated spot in your home to tuck away purses and hang car keys. Make it easy for them by mounting hooks and wall racks (might we suggest the Eames Hang‐It‐All?). And make sure that there are plenty of coat hangers in a closet or an armoire.

Often they are a mixture of new and old – they add character to your room and say as much about you as the colors and style you have chosen. However don't underestimate their importance in styling or in practicality. A mismatched or incorrectly placed piece could destroy the look you have been trying to achieve or hinder your day‐to‐day use of the room. If you have a traditional bedroom think vintage‐inspired accessories and textiles rather than chrome and high gloss. Go for crisp white cotton sheets with a statement throw and matching cushions sparkling crystal and pretty flowers vintage mirrors and lighting and definitely some vintage rugs. A plush chair. If you have the space make sure you have a comfy chair to retreat to when chaos reigns elsewhere in your home. I love the way the stripes used here reflect the light from the Venetian blinds. Stripes are a good choice for traditional styling and neutral colors suit both men and women. Stripes and florals were made for each other so add a pretty floral cushion in matching tones and you'll have a spot you both love. Extra mirrors. Mirrors are a practical necessity in any bedroom but try to think creatively when positioning them. The mirrors above the bedside tables here reflect the light from the window and will also look pretty when the bedside lamps are on. If your room isn't very wide they'll also add depth. A posy vase. No traditional bedside table is complete without a posy vase. Fill it with fragrant sweet peas or simple country garden blooms and they'll be sure to lift your spirits when the alarm goes off.

While many dressing tables are fussy frilly or just too girly for my taste here I've gathered some of my favorite modern‐looking dressing tables to share with you. Whether you're planning to set up a dressing table in your bedroom in the bathroom or nearby these ideas will surely inspire your space. If you're on the lookout for a dressing table and crave sleek lines the deco design of the table shown here with its wood finish and simple design speaks to those of us with a modern taste. This dressing table in a room adjacent to the bedroom is glamorous without being fussy. If you're considering using a similar setup for your dressing area painting the two spaces the same color will unify the rooms. If you crave color consider purchasing an older dressing table and painting it to fit your needs. If a matching chair isn't included in the deal buy one that fits well with the table and paint it to match. The gorgeous natural light in this bathroom makes it the perfect space for a small dressing table. Medicine cabinet–style mirrors above the dressing table provide storage and give this dressing table a built‐in look. A dressing table chair is the perfect place for a nice bright splash of color. If your prefer to keep things monochromatic upholstering the dressing table chair in the same shade as the wall will make a simple statement.

Also included here is a small piece of art in dreamy bedroom colors. Art does not have to be hung on a wall. Leaning small artworks against the wall provides a layered look. A step table is a great option beside a bed because it allows layers of surface area. A lamp books art water and fresh flowers all fit on this versatile piece. Notice how the color of the step table adds to the room's palette. A petite tray table with a small drawer has just enough space for a colorful lamp fresh flowers and a small jewelry box. Boxes of any style are great for holding earrings and necklaces taken off just before bed. This homemade bedside table consists of vintage suitcases on blocks. It's a creative and visual win for this room. Notice that the suitcases are on the low side allowing for an adjustable lamp and a full view of the window. All the bedside basics fit onto a tray that provides a flat surface. Consider a wall‐mounted table for the tiniest of spaces. There's just enough room for an adjustable lamp art and an alarm clock. A beautiful white chest of drawers holds a lamp in the center a plant to the left and an alarm clock. Notice the federal‐style mirror to the side of the lamp creating a layered bedside vignette.

"The owner likes traditional claw‐foot tubs but the house called for a more modern fixture" says Randall Mars of Randall Mars Architects. "This tub by Wetstyle has modern lines with that same feeling. In addition it floats nicely in the space and enjoys great views. The pocket shutters offer privacy while flooding the room with light". Think green. "This bathroom was an ecochic project where we used several natural or recycled/reclaimed products" says Kerrie L. Kelly of Kerrie Kelly Design Lab. "The clients fell in love with the hammered‐copper tub when they saw it. Luckily the entire bathroom was demoed so we had the opportunity to take an existing tub/shower and covert the space to accommodate a large shower and separate freestanding tub. It now serves as the centerpiece to the master suite renovation".
