Not only will you guard against damage from standing water but you'll also protect yourself from skidding on wet floors. Angle the shower floor slightly so that water flows toward the drain and think about adding a second drain for doubly effective siphoning. Select surfaces that can stand up to moisture. Even with careful attention to an open shower's design splashes and steam will escape. Outfit your bath with surfaces that hold their own against moisture: porcelain or glass tile metal stone solid surfacing engineered quartz and some woods. Avoid fabrics and other materials that are prone to mildew.

If you want a table to last through years of dinner party wear and tear choose a table made from a hardwood such as mahogany walnut maple oak and teak. Tables made from engineered or composite woods which include plywoods and MDF are durable and economical but are never as strong as a hardwood.

Published at Thursday, May 25th 2017, 07:36:10 AM by Edda Braune. Bedroom. Trundle Beds Double Down on Style. I've always been partial to trundle beds. My childhood bedroom had a white iron daybed with a pop‐up trundle underneath and friends who slept over thought it was the coolest thing to have a "secret" bed that pulled out at a moment's notice. Originally designed as a sleeping pad for servants who remained by the family's side during the night trundles have evolved into a time‐honored solution for maximizing overnight quarters without taking up undue space. This trundle expands the functionality and spices up the design of a spare slim guestroom/office. The desk seems as though it would be more useful for storing nighttime reading than for doing actual work – you'd have to sit cross‐legged to type or write. Trundles don't always have to be concealed beneath a bedskirt or behind a drawer front. In this cheery eclectic bedroom the bright green of the bed frame is carried to the trundle box beneath left on display for another jolt of color. Here's another trundle right in the open. I like seeing the tiny hint of royal blue to break up all of the wood. What makes better use of space than bunk beds? Bunk beds with a pullout mattress underneath. This technique works especially well in vacation houses or for families who have relatives and friends visit frequently. Trundles beneath these twin beds double the room's sleeping capacity from two to four – a pretty nifty trick. Alternatively you could use the trundles for storage. Sleek and elegant this trundle blends so smoothly with the striated wood frame of the daybed that the handles are the only giveaway it's there at all. A trundle on rails pulls out and slides in smoothly and it's guaranteed to stay in place. What a great idea!

A sloped ceiling helps to occupy some of the visual space that a tall headboard and piles of pillows would. Buttress it with furniture. This bed backs up to an integrated shelf and bench unit that makes the long narrow space seem snug. Orienting the bed against a wall also enhances the enveloping feel. Keep the scale large. In a tiny room even a double or queen‐size bed will feel massive and oversize scale translates to a feeling of comfort and warmth. You'll need enough room to walk on either side so don't squeeze it in too tightly. Stay low to the ground. A mattress that sits on the floor feels just right for curling up and lounging. Frame it with a four‐poster. Without canopies testers or other draped fabric treatments four‐poster beds can feel wonderfully spare. This one provides a visual framework that helps to create a cozy sense of boundaries. Warm it with color. Vivid tomato red keeps this floating bed from feeling sterile. Layer in texture. Nubby tactile linens and surfaces help to prevent a minimalist bed from feeling flat and one‐dimensional. Combine three or four textural yet comfortable elements such as the woven rug wooden planking and feathery plant in this space. Keep the color scheme basic to preserve the stripped‐down sensibility.

Published at Wednesday, May 24th 2017, 21:56:52 PM by Edda Braune. Bedroom. Since the Victorian era what we need in the bedroom has changed very little. We need essentially the same pieces – bed bedside tables clothes storage. And we like essentially the same aesthetic – comfortable peaceful even luxurious. Indeed we may still find the fabrics and wallpapers of that period attractive. Victorian staples such as freestanding wardrobes marble‐topped washstands and folding screens can be reinvented for modern bedrooms while still retaining the Victorian feel. Keep reading to learn how to turn a Victorian bedroom into a personal space you'll love spending time in. It's worth noting that Victorian ladies in their country houses often spent the entire morning in bed reading and writing letters. I'm not sure I'd get away with that but if I did I would want the finest linen and lace to surround me – just like them. Besides the bed the wardrobe would undoubtedly be the largest piece of furniture in a Victorian bedroom. The most popular versions had a mirror in the center cupboard and double‐width storage on either side. Traditionally wardrobes were made of dark varnished wood – a rather large and somber feature for today's tastes. But you can often pick one up cheaply and achieve great effects by stripping and painting it. Although not always a four‐poster (even though they were popular) Victorian beds often had draperies made from light fabric with matching curtains on the windows. Matching draperies and window dressing adorn this French‐inspired room without the four‐poster bed. Note the screen in the corner – these were hugely popular in Victorian bedrooms. Traditionally used to hide unsightly items (or maybe for the lady to dress behind) the screen today serves as a wonderful way to change the contours of the room.

Published at Wednesday, May 24th 2017, 19:39:49 PM by Edda Braune. Bedroom. Think of a classic color palette for a young boy's bedroom and you probably imagine navy and denim blues reds khakis and tans and dark wood accents. And while there's a reason so many boys' spaces default to those hues (they're cheery yet masculine and they work for all ages) a less expected palette can feel just as appropriate. Check out the fresh fun examples below. Cocoa brown and turquoise punch up this lively boy's space. The zebra‐print rug and striped wall treatment are kid friendly yet sophisticated and they'll still look up‐to‐date when the stuffed animals give way to sports gear and electronic equipment. Here's another variation on that same color scheme. Because it's limited to just one wall the robot‐print wallpaper would be easy to strip and replace with a more adult pattern down the road. Hot orange sparks this otherwise neutral boy's bedroom. Orange is a terrific color for kids – it's youthful and energetic but not at all childish. This orange white and gray palette gives a sports theme a chic spin. It's proof that you don't have to drench your room in the colors of your favorite team to show your spirit. Red and khaki look fresh all over again with a liberal dose of black. Mod accents such as these pendant lights are often winners in a kids' space – they have an inherent whimsy that suits young ones well. This chocolate and citron palette takes its cue from tennis balls. The round accent pillows are an especially fun touch. Tangerine safety‐cone orange and neon green combine for a zesty zippy toddler's space.
