For the modernists out there you would think picking finishes and fixtures would be easier with less adornment and fewer decisions to make. For some this might be true but I find that for others this style can be just as challenging. It's all about restraint and editing and that's hard.
If you're doing tile or stone floors work on picking those materials at the same time as cabinets backsplash and countertops. The relationships among these materials is critical. It's tough to mix different types of stone and tile unless you want your kitchen to look like a showroom.
Barn red. Blackburn Architects notes that this kitchen is a "project that salvages a historic German‐style bank barn that fell into serious decay and readapts it into a private family entertainment space".
Layer your lighting. "In the last five years we've seen a huge change in the way that our clients look at kitchen lighting" notes Heather Moe of Design Moe Kitchen & Bath. "While function is still important we now layer the lighting to give homeowners an extraordinary flexibility of effect. We routinely have seven levels of illumination: countertop and general lighting under‐cabinet task lighting over‐cabinet up lighting accent cabinet lighting some supporting sconce fixtures (mounted on walls or on cabinets) ceiling lighting and – to top it all off – a central accent fixture usually something pretty and eye catching at the room's focal point".
This divided bath by Smith & Vansant Architects features white 3‐by‐6‐inch tiles in both the sink area and the shower area though each room has its own style of floor tile. The headquarters of Schoolhouse Electric proves that subway tiles and gray grout aren't just for the bathroom and kitchen. Here they're used in an office space that celebrates timeless and minimalist style.
Play with the unexpected. "I love a little bit of surprise in a room and of course hanging a chandelier gives me just that" says Robin Denker of Kitchens By Design. "A little bit of bling something unexpected like using clear prism lightbulbs in a chandelier".
Serene gray. This kitchen is part of an urban loft. "We attempted to create a sophisticated room that is well organized and complementary within a much larger space" says Ayhan Ozan of Chelsea Atelier Architect. "The color gray has a subtle authority to it without entirely surrendering the serenity of the open loft to the kitchen".
White on white. This kitchen is in sync with the overall design of the house. "It's part of a new French‐inspired home on South River in Annapolis Maryland" says Brad Creer of Bradford Design. "The wife wanted an all‐white house both inside and outside including the furniture. The only other colors are the limited use in some of the accents. And the only nonwhite space in the home is the husband's large barroom which has a dark wood finish".
