Work in some caramel leather. Interior designer Brandi Hagen had fun playing with her client's penchant for Western style in this sitting area off the master bedroom. A coffee table upholstered in warm‐colored durable caramel leather anchors a bedroom sitting area. Western prints a colorful horse painting and a graphic Thomas Paul thoroughbred pillow round out the accessories while a restrained color palette keeps things from turning too themey.
Black Sashes. Sashes in interior design refer to the parts of the window holding each pane of glass in place – the frames within the frame. Painting your sashes black is a classic way to create instant drama in a window without adding anything else. It's common in countryside estates but looks perfectly contemporary in a more modern home that isn't the size of an estate.
Start small. Want to try black but still feeling unsure? Take your cue from this stylish abode and focus your dark aspirations on a small in‐between space such as a landing. The bold contrast will look stunning and the black won't be overwhelming due to the bright rooms on either side.
Create a tranquil vibe. The texture of this garden wall creates a beautiful ripple effect for a soothing atmosphere. Floor‐level uplights bring out the details for both a sophisticated look and a tranquil evening spot.
Shelves. As the trend of open upper shelves continues to grow people are looking for new ways to apply them. One of my favorite ways is stretching shelves across windows.
Lights. If you have a well‐placed window in your kitchen but the angle does not invite a lot of light it could be a perfect place to add a pendant light. The fixture will help illuminate the counter and will give the feeling of a natural radiance emanating from the outdoors.
If you favor cooler hues try a palette of blue‐grays then spice it up with hints of hot red. This is a terrific palette for an office or a kid's or teen's bedroom. The grays have a soothing vibe but the heart‐racing red injects some energy into the space.
Achieving the right proportion of accent wall to other wall space is crucial. Here wood‐paneled walls go beyond just an accent but work beautifully thanks to a high ceiling and a neutral palette.
